The Bleed Edge
Web Design and Development form the core services of Pixelcode, but sometimes we like to dip our toes into other mediums.
Print design has always been at the core of our skill-set, and oftentimes we don’t get enough opportunities to flex these skills in our day-to-day business.
The Bleed Edge is our outlet for the printed goods that we design and print. Whether it’s a limited-edition screen print or our Pixelcode-branded t-shirt or our custom range of sketch/note books, the fondly named Copybooks, we’re constantly thinking of new products to stock our virtual shelves with.
The Bleed Edge has been online for just under a year and in July 2011, we updated the branding and the website design. The previous design served us well, but we wanted to lighten the design, so the products were better showcased.
We also rearranged pages within the site, allowing for more information to be displayed without having visitors to delve too deeply into the website.
We had tried other pre-made e-commerce and shopping cart solutions prior to the latest iteration, but we found them limited on a single issue- shipping calculation. We ship items in flat envelopes and rolled up, in postal tubes. Sometimes a customer orders an item of both and we wanted a more accurate method of calculating postage, so we weren’t overcharging or undercharging our customers. Our solution was a custom-built shopping cart which does the complex calculations before sending the customers on to PayPal, to checkout.
As well as solving this particular shipping problem, our custom shopping cart allowed us to customise the aesthetics of the website completely. We believe in using established design patterns for a smooth shopping experience, but we also like to add elements to create some visual interest on the website. Visit The Bleed Edge and add some products to the shopping basket, to experience the ease of use.
As well as design and produce all the products on the (virtual) shelves, Pixelcode designed the branding, promotional images, website layout and coding throughout the site. As mentioned above, we created a custom shopping basket for use with PayPal. The website was created with valid Web Standards.
